We will begin our exciting industrial engineering unit for the 2nd graders right when we get back from fall break. This is an engineering unit called Marvelous Machines: Making Work Easier, which is part of the Engineering is Elementary (EiE) curriculum developed by the Museum of Science in Boston. EiE is a curricular program that integrates the science students are already learning in elementary school with the Engineering Design Process (Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, and Improve). Throughout this unit students will use what they learned about simple machines to design and improve a factory subsystem. The unit will begin with a story about a girl from Boston, Massachusetts, named Aisha, who solves a similar engineering design challenge. During this two week unit, students will experience hands-on learning in the STEM lab where they will work on assembly lines to make quality cookies and they will also create factory subsystems using our brand new simple machine kits. They will have the opportunity to build their subsystem using a variety of simple machines, including; levers: pulleys, gears, wheel and axles and inclined planes. This hands-on STEM unit exposes students to real world and career opportunities in the field of industrial engineering. We will conclude the unit with a field trip to the Celestial Seasonings Factory in Boulder.
