Volunteer Opportunity (posted by Bethany Merkling; 08/25/10)
Volunteering for your child's lunch and recess time is a great way to get involved at American Academy and a great way to check in and see your child during their busy school day. This year we are asking that you sign up to volunteer in shifts by grade level. Please note that when you sign up you will be covering each grade level that you sign up for throughout the entire lunch AND recess period (45 min). Feel free to sign up for more than one grade level at a time. To sign up log on to: www.mysignup.com/aalunch Kindergarten: 10:45 - 11:29 Recess/Lunch 1st grade: 10:45 - 11:29 Lunch/Recess 2nd grade: 12:20 - 1:05 Lunch/Recess 3rd grade: 11:32 - 12:17 Lunch/Recess 4th grade: 12:20 - 1:05 Recess/Lunch 5th grade: 11:32 - 12:17 Recess/Lunch 6th grade: 1:08 - 1:53 Lunch/Recess 7th/8th grade: 1:08 - 1:53 Recess/Lunch Thank you for volunteering!
Miller Farms (posted by Julie Weiss; 08/19/10)
It is time to get excited about 2nd grade! We will have our first STEM unit on Agricultural Engineering very early this year. We learn all about plants and pollination, the kids create their own plant pollinators and we take an incredible fieldtrip to Miller Farms. Our trip to the farm will be on September 10th. We will take 2 buses and each class can take 4 chaperones. Chaperones will be taken on a first come, first served basis. We do try to make sure that every parent who would like to attend a fieldtrip is able to do so during the year. Please let your homeroom teacher know if you would like to help with this trip.
2nd Grade Daily Schedule (posted by Hollie Lusk; 08/17/10)
Look under downloads for the 2nd grade daily schedule. We'd love volunteers for each homeroom during morning recess from 10:15-10:40. If you are ever available to take the kiddos out to recess, please email your child's homeroom teacher.
2nd Grade Reading Challenge (posted by Hollie Lusk; 08/17/10)
Here in 2nd grade, we don't have reading logs. We do however challenge all students to read for 400+ minutes each month. This first month, the 400 minutes includes the few weeks we are in school in August & the entire month of September. Every student who fills this out will receive an ice cream or popsicle party the first week in October!

Homework Philosophy
Homework is an important extension of the school day and serves to reinforce student learning. It provides much needed extra practice for skill and concept mastery. Homework is also an avenue for parents to become involved and knowledgeable about their child's learning.
What's the big idea about the big idea?!
Parents, we want you to know what your child is learning in our science and social studies classes. You will now be able to find an outline for what we will be covering during each of these units under downloads on the home page. Feel free to use these as a study guide or to help you sift through What Your Second Grader Needs to Know.
