Just a few days left...
FIELD TRIP
Field Trip to the Hudson Gardens on Tuesday, May 21st: We will leave the school around 8:50 in the morning. We should arrive at Hudson Gardens by 9:30 and will begin our adventure. Students will need to bring a water bottle, lunch, and sweatshirt. If you have not turned in your permission slip, please print from the website and get it in as soon as possible! If anyone else is willing to chaperone and drive, we could use one more driver. Otherwise we can double up with some of the other second grade classes… Please let me know if you are interested!
MATH
This is our last week of math! We will have a fact assessment on Tuesday and a written assessment on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday will be spent tying up loose ends, turning in missing work, and having some math fun.
SCIENCE
We are anxiously awaiting the hatching of our cacoons! It should be any day now!! We are still keeping a close eye on our milkweed bugs and also our brassica plants.
SOCIAL STUDIES
We have been learning all about Civil Rights. We will continue our studies this week and wrap up with an assessment on Tuesday the 21st.
READING
This is our last week of spelling. Homework this week is to write one complete sentence for all of the spelling words (20 sentences in all). I also uploaded the words to Spelling City if anyone wants extra practice. We will also be finishing up "Fudge-a-Mania" this week. We've had lots of fun reading this!
LANGUAGE ARTS
We will finish up our Shurley Grammar this week. We are also reading, "Charlotte's Web" together. We will watch "Charlotte's Web" on the last day of school to celebrate finishing the book.
Math
Math: We cover Lessons 104 - 108. Please note that we will have Fact Assessments on Tuesday and Wednesday and we will have a Written Assessment. We are working extra hard in class to memorize the subtraction facts, but most students will need extra help at home!!!
Reading
Reading: We are going to begin reading "Fudge-a-Mania" this week! We will generally read about one chapter a day and follow up with some fun comprehension activities. Spelling test will be on Friday and "Choose Two" will be their homework this week.
History
History: We will finish immigration the 7th with our test & immigration party that day. We will send out an email soon asking for volunteers for our immigration party. We will then learn about Civil Rights for the remainder of the year & conclude the unit with a test the last week of school (most likely Tuesday May 21st).
Science
We have a lot of critters in our classrooms right now. We are growing brassica plants; we have mealworms that are in the pupa stage & some that have turned into adult darkling beetles. We are also going to hatch silk worms & watch them grow along with caterpillars. We will continue to have short assessments with each investigation.
Language Arts
We will try to finish Shurley Grammar up to Unit 3 Group 10. Each homeroom will start reading Charlotte’s Web the week of May 6th. We have a lot of fun activities to go along with the book. We will continue doing Mountain Language with our classes. It will help if you work on abc order with your kiddos when you have time. They are having trouble with words such as: aid, ahead, aim, alone. Melvin Bubble writing project: This information will be sent out next week.

Math test on Monday so no homework! The rest of the week we will cover Lessons 101, 102, and 103. History: We will continue to learn about Immigration and focus more specifically on Ellis Island this week. Hopefully you all saw the Family Tree packet come home on Friday. Please let me know if you have any questions!! Science: We have built habitats for our milkweed bug eggs to hatch and grow in... Now we will be observing our mealworms, our brassica plants, and also our milkweed bugs. Oh my goodness!! Language Arts: We will continue to work on Mountain Language and will also work through Unit 3 Group 6 Test in Shurley Grammar. Reading: We will be reading 2 stories this week: "Butterfly Seeds" and also "The Story of the Statue of Liberty". Spelling homework will be "Choose Two". No phonograms (again) this week... Thanks and have a GREAT four day week!!!!
Math: We will be covering Lessons 96, 97, 98, 99, and 100 this week. Each day will entail the typical homework and facts practice. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO PRACTICE YOUR FACTS AT HOME!!! WE WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE READY FOR 3RD GRADE!!! Science: We will continue our observations of the mealworms and watch as they transform into pupas and then into darkling beetles. We will also continue to keep a close eye on our recently planted brassica plants. History: Great job on the BioBottles last week! They were all so creative and fun!! We have finished our unit on the Civil War and will now be spending the next three weeks studying Immigration in the 1800's and early 1900's. Stay tuned for some super fun projects that we will get to do with immigration! Reading and Spelling: We will look at the story, "New Hope" in our Open Court books. Please work on the "choose two" spelling homework. Be on the lookout for phonograms next week... Language Arts: We will be working on our Mountain Language and Shurley Grammar this week. Hi Second Graders!
Hi there! I wanted to quickly introduce myself. My name is Ms. Monroe, and I am thrilled to be teaching Ms. Mazzoni's class for the rest of the school year! It's going to be a busy and fun few months and I can't wait! I'm (mostly) from Colorado (I moved here when I was 12). I am a mom of four great kids and love teaching! When I'm not at school, you can always find me hanging out with my family and having as much fun as possible. I hope you've all had a great Spring Break!
