3rd Grade News 9/3/10 (posted by Kelly Baker; 09/03/10)
MAP tests:
MAP testing will begin on September 13th until September 17th. Please be sure your child is here, rested and ready!
Reading Logs
All third graders are required to spend a minimum of 20 minutes reading each evening. Some reading teachers may have printed out a sheet to record your child's reading, and sent it home. If not, simply print the document available in the Download section of our page and begin recording what your child is reading.

Books on tape, child reading aloud to sibling/parent and parent reading to child are acceptable reading log entries.

September Reading Log is due on October 1st.

History:
Your child took their Geography quiz today in class and their scores will be entered shortly.

The weeks of September 7th and September 13th we will not be having history. Instead we will be using that time to work on our technology project. If you have not already done so, please email your child’s homeroom teacher pictures (one family and one portrait).

Thank you
Thank you to all of you who were able to attend Back to School Night. If you were unable to attend, the PowerPoint presentation is available to you under the download section of our homepage.
Have a fabulous weekend and remember there is NO SCHOOL on Monday September 6th.

Reading Logs are here, reading logs are here!

If not, simply print the document available in the Download section of our page and begin recording what your child is reading.

Your child can complete it on their own as appropriate.

You may also save the document to your computer and fill it out electronically and submit it electronically on October first if that is easier for you.

Thank you so much for your support and encouragement.

QUIZ: Friday (posted by Kelly Baker; 08/30/10)
Geography Quiz
All third grade classes will be having a Geography Quiz on FRIDAY.

Please study the World Map that should have come home today in your child's red folder.

Together in class we are working on a packet that will provide as another tool to study. Packets will come home by Thursday for review.

8/27/10 (posted by Linda McKenzie; 08/27/10)
Welcome Back
We made it through the first week! I'm sure your child is as exhausted as we are, but it was a great first week. We hope that they enjoyed their first few days in 3rd grade.
Science
We began our unit on cells this week. The students are enjoying this difficult concept and it has sparked some great conversations in all of our classrooms. Please keep any materials that may come home that pertain to cells. You will need them to help your child for the assessment when we are finished with this unit.
History
Our history lessons began by reviewing maps and globes. We have been discussing the continents, oceans, hemispheres, and our place in the world. We will continue our study on this topic through next week.
Back to School Night
Our back to school night is Thursday, September 2nd at 5pm. We will be holding our meeting in the cafeteria with all 4 of the teachers together. This will give you a chance to meet all of your child's teachers at once. Please remember to leave your children at home as we will be discussing many important curriculum topics and school policies. Looking forward to seeing all of you on Thursday!
Picture Day
School pictures are on Tuesday, August 31st. Please make sure you send your child looking their best that day for pictures. An order form was sent home in Friday folders.
Textbook Condition Report Form (posted by Jacki Christy; 08/25/10)
Hello

Here we go! Many children will be bringing home textbooks over the coming days/weeks. Please inspect the book for damage, go to the Library Webpage and print the Textbook Condition Report. Fill out the form and send it back in with your child at your earliest convenience.

We highly recommend that you provide a cover for any hardback textbooks to best protect them on their journeys.

Math books (as appropriate) will come home each evening and should be returned each day.

Science and History books will come home only as necessary for extra studying or make-up work for absent students.

The kids are very excited to have this big responsibility. We thank you in advance for helping your child take care of these valuable educational resources.

Please take this gentle reminder that it would be highly beneficial for each household to purchase What Your Third Grader Needs to Know to have it available for supplemental review as necessary for individual students.

THANK YOU!

Lunch/Recess Volunteers (posted by Jacki Christy; 08/25/10)
WE NEED YOU.....YOUR CHILDREN NEED YOU......(pretty please?)

Volunteering for your child's lunch and recess time is a great way to get involved at American Academy and a great way to check in and see your child during their busy school day.

This year we are asking that you sign up to volunteer in shifts by grade level.

Please note that when you sign up you will be covering each grade level that you sign up for throughout the entire lunch AND recess period (45 min). Feel free to sign up for more than one grade level at a time.

Pizza and Sandwiches Start in Mid-September (posted by Kelly Baker; 08/25/10)
Pizza Tuesday and Sandwich Thursday do not begin until September 14 and 16th.

We have quite a few students who think today is Pizza Tuesday and they do not have a lunch. Remember, the PTO does not have Pizza Tuesday and Sandwich Thursday scheduled until September 14 (so, the pizza forms you filled out were for Sept 14 through Nov 16).

Parents, please remember to pack your students a bag lunch for the first few Tuesdays and Thursdays!

Welcome Back to School (posted by Jacki Christy; 08/25/10)
We are so excited to be a part of your child's educational journey. We count on all our parents and students to work with us as a team to ensure the academic success of all of our students.

Please ensure that your child(ren) are well rested and have a nutritious breakfast each day. Organizing their supplies and materials the night before school will help everyone involved in the morning process.

We kindly request that you send a book in with your child so that they may sit quietly and read in the hallway as they arrive to school prior to the 8:05 bell. We will be speaking with all the children tomorrow to let them know our expectations for behavior throughout the school.

We would also like for you to purchase (within the next week) a spiral notebook that your child will be using as a journal. We forgot to add this request to our school supply list. We apologize.

Have a pleasant Sunday afternoon/evening.

Box Tops (posted by Kelly Baker; 08/25/10)
Clip and Save
Once again, the PTO is collecting Box Tops for our school. Please remember to clip and save all your Box Tops and have your child bring them to their homeroom teacher. Every little bit counts!
